Cardinal Keith O'Brien Steps Down

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric, has resigned as the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

Pope Benedict has accepted his resignation and he will no longer take part in the papal election for a successor.

This leaves Britain unrepresented in the conclave.

The Ballycastle born Cardinal has denied allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards priests dating from the 1980s.
