Greater Protection Of Food Chain Needed - O'Neill
Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill has said greater protection of the foodchain is essential, following the recent horsemeat scandal.
Minister O’Neill has met with the Chief Executive of Safefood in Dublin to discuss initiatives to improve horizon scanning within the food chain.
Safefood is the public body responsible for researching issues relating to food safety and healthy eating across the island of Ireland.
Speaking after her meeting with Martin Higgins, Minister O’Neill said: "I have always supported Safefood’s idea of a system where all those involved at all stages of the food chain can report areas of concern, unusual findings or malpractice. It is important that Government can take advantage of the knowledge and practical experience of those involved in the industry, alongside other sources of information, to scan the horizon for emerging issues, and target research and new measures accordingly.
"Especially in light of the current controversy surrounding Equine DNA being found in food products, I believe such an intervention would help bring serious concerns to the attention of the relevant authorities at an early stage.
"I plan to raise this matter further with Ministerial colleagues to see if such a system can be agreed to be implemented in the time ahead."

A £150,000 support package for several projects promoting the quality of local food - such as the successful Taste of Ulster scheme - has been announced by the Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill. The Minister made the announcement today as she met with one of the beneficiaries of the funding support, Food NI.

Belfast food outlets to be rated online
Eating establishments in Belfast are soon to be rated on a new website to be set up by Belfast City Council. The website, which will be known as 'Scores on the Doors', will provide a facility for consumers to be able check whether the standard of the food served at the premises is up to scratch.
