Junior Ministers Celebrate Chinese New Year
Junior Ministers Jennifer McCann and Jonathan Bell joined Chinese community organisations yesterday to usher in the Year of the Snake.
The Junior Ministers were celebrating with the Chinese Welfare Association and Chinese Chamber of Commerce at a celebration in the Europa Hotel.
Jennifer McCann said: "The recent Census results show that our Chinese community is now the biggest of the minority ethnic groups here. For over 50 years the Chinese community has made a very significant contribution of energy, enthusiasm and investment to our community. The marvellous exhibition tonight of dance and performance is a fantastic representation of what can be achieved through teamwork, co-operation and co-ordination."
Junior Minister Jonathan Bell added: "I am clear in my belief that there are many opportunities ahead and that we need to do all we can to improve our relationship with China, and our own Chinese community has a very significant role to play in this process. Last year I had the great privilege of supporting a trade mission to the People’s Republic of China and I was very impressed by the enthusiasm and friendliness of the people I met.
The Chamber of Commerce was celebrating 30th Anniversary of representing the Chinese business community in Northern Ireland.
Chairperson Danny Wong MBE said: "United together, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce set up the Chinese Welfare Association to expand its variety of services for Chinese people and in doing so increase our influence in the local community to become the key Chinese organisation serving the Chinese people in Northern Ireland in the community sector. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has adapted to the global economic situation and seized good opportunities with its fervent love for our culture and developing links in China.
"Together we have built platforms to strengthen our relationships with the Chinese Consulate-general in Edinburgh and the local government, as well as playing an active role in facilitating the integration of Chinese people with the local community."
