Laser Pen Offender Identified Via Media Campaign
The High Court has heard how a man who shone a laser pen at police during rioting in north Belfast was identified through a media campaign, according to BBC NI.
50-year-old Stephen Boreland of Lord Street Mews was arrested when a member of the public recognised him in a series of pictures of offenders published in the local press.
He was spotted attacking PSNI lines in a 12-hour riot in September 2012.
Sixty officers were injured in the violence, which took place at Carlisle Circus and Denmark Street.
Police came under sustained attack from masonry, petrol bombs, fireworks, bottles, planks of wood and flower pots.
Mr Boreland was detained in December following the publication of CCTV images in the press.
He was then shown photographs that allegedly put him at the front of the disorder, shining a laser pen at police officers.
He apparently admitted being the person in the footage and to having used the laser pen to distract police.
His defence counsel said Mr Boreland only took part in the rioting out of curiosity.
Mr Boreland has sought release from custody following surgery for a broken wrist.
His request for bail was refused due to the risk of any further offending.
