Traces Of Pork DNA Found In NI Firms Halal Products
Northern Irish manufacturer McColgan's Quality Foods has been identified as the source of halal food found to contain traces of pork DNA.
3663 has said it will no longer source halal products from the from after its beef pastry products labelled halal and supplied to prisons in England and Wales tested positive for pork DNA.
3663 said it had withdrawn all halal products from McColgan's Quality Foods, based in Tyrone, and said it would not be sourcing any further halal products from the company.
Dr Ali Saleem said on RTE's Morning Ireland that for a muslim, eating pork was "equivalent to taking drugs".
The Food Satndards Agency said: T"his is an unacceptable situation and people have a right to expect that the food they are eating is correctly described. We have called an urgent meeting of major retailers and suppliers, to ensure that everyone is fully aware of their responsibilities.
"It is the responsibility of food businesses to ensure the food they sell contains what it says on the label.
"We are considering, with the local authority, whether legal action is appropriate following the investigation."

Fork Truck Accident Victim 'Brain Damaged'
Serious head injuries that left a factory worker with debilitating brain injury has seen the Co Tyrone food processor, Linden Foods heavily fined over an accident on its premises. Lucas Da Costa, 42, who is originally from East Timor, was struck by falling pallets at the company's factory in Dungannon in February 2010.

Strabane firm invests £6m in expansion
A Strabane foods firm is to invest £6 million to double the size of its factory and expand sales of its pies and other foods outside Northern Ireland. The investment by McColgan’s Quality Foods, which was announced today by managing director Brian McColgan, will also create 31 new jobs by December 2004.
