Former Anglo Irish Boss Faces Trial

The former boss of Anglo Irish Bank is to go on trial at the beginning of next year, having allegedly played a substantial role in the bank’s collapse.

Sean FitzPatrick will face charges of lending the bank's money to a group of investors in order to mislead shareholders and falsely inflate the bank's share price.

The news comes as a further blow to the bailed out institution, following legal battles with the family of Fermanagh businessman Sean Quinn.

The bankrupt former billionaire is fighting a high-profile legal battle against the bank, which is now owned by the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC).

Mr FitzPatrick is the former chairman and chief executive of Anglo. He will face 16 charges along with two other men.

The former Anglo boss was once a millionaire banker and a leading figure in the so-called Celtic Tiger boom in the Republic of Ireland.

He left the bank in December 2008.

His trial is expected to take at least three months.

On Wednesday, Dublin's Circuit Criminal Court was told there are complex issues of disclosure in the case.

Judge Mary Ellen Ring will oversee the trial, due to begin on 13 January 2014.
