Consultation Launched On Healthcare For Overseas Visitors
Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the provision of healthcare for overseas visitors.
Minister Poots said: "We have a duty of care to any person in Northern Ireland whose life or long-term health is at immediate risk.
"There is not however an obligation to provide free treatment for overseas visitors and there has been a long-standing policy of charging overseas visitors for most treatment, a position similar to the other UK countries.
"These new proposals therefore are designed to be effective and keep pace with an ever-changing healthcare and international landscape."
The Department of Health says it recognises there are "occasions when people visiting Northern Ireland will need access to healthcare".
The new proposals follow a review by the Department.
The Minister concluded saying: "It is incumbent upon us to maintain a policy that balances cost, public health, migration and humanitarian principles. The consultation will provide a pathway to support this."
The consultation closes on 10 April 2013.
