O'Neill Reinforces Need For Rural Broadband
Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill says she has reinforced the need for rural access to broadband during a meeting with BT.
The Minister met with BT Chief Executive Colm O’Neill to discuss issues concerning broadband availability in rural areas.
She said: "Everyone is well aware of my interest in the lack of rural broadband and I was glad to be able to take the opportunity of meeting again with Colm O’Neill the CEO of BT Ireland to discuss rural not spots and what BT are doing to address these."
The Minister continued: "I reinforced the need for everyone to have access to good quality broadband in rural areas. It is now an essential basic service that assists both householders in everyday life and helps rural businesses to grow, develop and prosper."
Minister O’Neill says she also discussed BT’s 'Connecting Communities' initiative and how her department may be able to use it to promote the use of broadband and IT services in rural areas.
The Minister concluded: "This meeting was extremely useful as it gave me the opportunity to discuss a range of broadband issues with BT. It is important to me that companies such as BT appreciate the impact lack of broadband has on the rural community."
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development intends to invest £5m in rural broadband through the Rural Development Programme over the next two years.

Broadband Technology Boosts Rural Areas
Northern Ireland Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has announced a further £88,000 for technology trials, to improve broadband services in rural areas across the country. The financial support, from the £1.9million Broadband Fund, has been awarded to two companies, H2O Ireland Limited and North West Electronics.

The DUP has called for vigilance to tackle rural crime, following the release of the NFUs Rural Crime Report 2022. The report showed a fall of over 33% in the number of incidents over the last 12 months in Northern Ireland, but that the rural crime in Northern Ireland in 2021 was valued at £1.7m.
