Man Arrested Over PSNI Car Bomb

A third man has been arrested as detectives continue an investigation into the attempted murder of a police officer.

A 25 and a 34-year-old man were held in Belfast on Monday.

A 41-year-old was arrested in west Belfast on Tuesday.

The investigation follows the placing of a bomb under a police officer's car. The device was discovered on the Upper Newtownards Road at about 14:00 on Sunday.

The officer discovered the bomb when he was getting ready to take his wife and two children out for Sunday lunch.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said: "It is very fortunate that this device was detected before it exploded and that no-one was killed or seriously injured."

He added that the threat to Northern Ireland’s police remained severe and encouraged PSNI officers to remain vigilant.

"Attacks on police officers are attacks on the entire community and cannot be allowed to continue," he said.

"We know there are people within our communities who know who did this, we know there are people out there who know exactly what is being planned.

"My plea to them is not to allow this small minority to drag us back to the past.

"Our belief is that this attempted murder was carried by those opposed to peace from within dissident republicanism.

"They don't care who they attack, they don't care who they kill. They are simply anti-peace and determined to carry on bringing pain and devastation to families and communities by maiming and killing."

A number of houses in the area had to be evacuated while Army bomb officers made the device safe.
