Nine Youths Arrested During Loyalist Protests

Nine children have been arrested during loyalist protests in Northern Ireland.

Several police officers were also injured in protests against restrictions on flying the union flag on Belfast City Hall.

Around 80 protests took place around NI on Monday.

All of the nine youths were arrested for public order offences in the Lisburn area, the youngest aged 11.

Police were attacked in the Newtownards Road area and an officer was also injured in Sandy Row, as fireworks and bricks were thrown.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Jones said: "While most of the protests were peaceful, the violence witnessed in some areas tonight is totally unacceptable.

"This is now the third week of protests and I am appealing to everyone involved to take a step back from this. It cannot and should not continue."
