Hydebank Prisoners Win Reading Award
Northern Ireland Prison Service Director General Sue McAllister has welcomed the news that library and education staff and prisoners at Hybebank YOC have won an award at a reading challenge event in London.
The Hydeback representatives won silver awards at the Six Book Challenge awards in London.
The Six Book Challenge is run by the Reading Agency to improve adult literacy across the UK.
Inmates and prisoners are invited to pick six reads and record their reading in a diary to get a certificate.
Congratulating the award winners, Sue McAllister said: "I am very proud of the excellent reading culture we have in Hydebank brought about by the enthusiasm of Jackie in the library and the staff in education. Winning this award is an excellent achievement. Improving reading skills and learning something new, can play a key role in helping to rehabilitate prisoners whilst in custody and enhance their life skills when they are released back into society to reduce the risk of re-offending.
"The Six Book Challenge’s aims are to help those with reading difficulties and encourage others to read, both are central to the rehabilitation of prisoners. I want to thank the Reading Agency for their Six Book Challenge initiative and their recognition of the efforts by our 147 participants at Hydebank Wood who have gained Silver awards. Their success out of a total of over 23,000 people across the UK demonstrates the potential which education can deliver amongst the prison population."
This is the second year Hydebank Wood YOC have participated in the scheme.

Women prisoners step out for charity
Four female prisoners at Maghaberry prison have raised over £1,600 for Action Cancer after completing a 10-mile sponsored walk. Both prisoners and staff dug into their pockets to sponsor the women on what turned out to be a more gruelling challenge than first anticipated.

Education Minister John O'Dowd has taken advantage of World Book Day 2013 to encourage reading among children. The Minister said: "The ability to read and write effectively is something that many of us take for granted, but sadly it is a skill that some people struggle with and this can have a negative impact on their lives.
