RUC Returned Pat Finucane Pistol To Army

A pistol used in the murder of Pat Finucane was given back to the British Army by the RUC, according to new details.

Previously unpublished papers have now been revealed which show evidence of collusion between the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the loyalist paramilitaries who murdered the Belfast lawyer in 1989.

The unseen chapter from the Stevens Inquiry shows RUC officers deliberately destroyed evidence pertaining to the trial, while exhibits and records were lost and fingerprints from the scene of the attack were not compared against those of suspects at the time.

Pat Finucane was 38 years old when he was shot by loyalists 14 times in front of his family.

The new evidence shows a Browning pistol was recovered by police and then given back to the British Army, from where it had previously been stolen by loyalists.

Mr Finucane's son Michael said he is not surprised by the revelations.

The information comes from a newly-released chapter in the report by Sir John Stevens, published in 2003.

It was released following a Freedom of Information request by RTE reporter Richard Dowling.
