L'Derry Bomb Suspects Due In Court
Three men are due in court in L’Derry today following the discovery of a home-made rocket on Thursday night.
Three men, two aged 47 and one aged 40, have been charged with terror offences after police discovered a home-made rocket in a car stopped in the city.
The men are being charged with possession of explosives, conspiracy to murder and having articles for use in terrorism.
A fourth, 41-year-old man was also arrested but has been released unconditionally.
It is thought the bomb which was discovered in the car is similar to those used against security forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and is capable of piercing armoured vehicles. A new republican paramilitary group calling itself 'the IRA' is suspected of stepping up it campaign.
The discovery of the bomb coincided with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s visit to Northern Ireland, where she was due to be discussing the peace process and the economy.
The device was found when police stopped a black Renault Megane car in the Westway area of Creggan.
It is claimed the bomb was part of a planned dissident republican attack to disrupt L’Derry’s year as UK City of Culture.
