Photographers Told To Hand Over Riot Footage

Press photographers will have to hand over pictures taken during a riot in the Ardoyne last 12 July, a judge has ruled.

The PSNI has undertaken legal action to obtain footage of the north Belfast riots during the summer.

Judge David McFarland ordered the Press Association and two photo agencies, Press Eye and Photopress, to disclose all materials relating to the riot.

The BBC, UTV, and Sky, were able to argue that as they were not ahead of police lines or PSNI cameras, their pictures did not need to be handed over.

The trouble occurred when members from an Orange lodge walked past shops in the Ardoyne following Twelfth celebrations in Belfast. Twenty PSNI officers were injured and 17 shots were fired in the disorder, which involved up to 90 people.

More than 30 suspects have so far been arrested.

Police are particularly interested in footage gained from YouTube and aerially from a police helicopter, which shows a gunman emerging from the crowd, opening fire and then running back.

It is argued the unbroadcast footage could help police in their investigations.

Judge David McFarland, the Recorder for Belfast, said a balance had to be struck between prosecutions and protecting journalists.
