Man Pleads Guilty Over Rape Of Girl

A man has pleaded guilty to raping and assaulting a 15-year-old girl in L’Derry.

20-year-old Adam Titheridge of Broom Road, Sittingbourne in Kent, changed his plea on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at Foyle and Londonderry College's junior school in July 2011.

Titheridge is due to be sentenced on 18 January following pre-sentence and victim impact reports.

The change in plea resulted from a request to re-play a recorded interview the girl had made with police officers.

It had been shown on the first day of the trial, but following the request that the remainder be shown Titheridge's counsel, Martin Rodgers QC, asked for his client to be re-arraigned.

He then pleaded guilty to both charges.

Judge Stephen Fowler instructed the jury foreman to return a verdict of guilty by confession.

500 Died During Last Year's Winter

Almost 500 elderly people in Northern Ireland died as a result of the cold last year.

The figure may be a drop on the previous year, but charity Age NI says that number of cold-related deaths in the 21st century is "a disgrace".

Research by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) shows 496 people died in 2011 from the effects of cold weather.

In 2010 the figure was 741.
