Underpass To Ease Westlink Traffic
Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced an underpass as the preferred option to improve traffic congestion at the M2, M3 and Westlink junction.
"The proposed improvements to this key junction will provide continuous links between three of the busiest roads in Northern Ireland - the M2, M3 and Westlink - which cater for over 100,000 vehicles daily," the Minister said.
"The cost of the Preferred Option for the York Street Interchange lies in the range of £100m to £135m and it is envisaged that construction would take three years to complete."
Links between the Westlink, M2 and M3 will now be created using underpasses underneath the existing Lagan Road and Dargan Rail Bridges and new bridges at York Street and Dock Street.
This is intended to separate strategic traffic from the road network and improve journey times.
Danny Kennedy said: "The Preferred Option is technically very challenging and a great deal of work has been carried out to ensure the buildability and viability of this project which is a high priority within the Roads Service Programme.
"Following the publication of these orders, my Department will hold the next formal public consultation. I would encourage all interested parties to give their comments and opinions to the Department."
The timescale for the start of construction is dependent upon a detailed economic appraisal and the availability of funding.
