Local parties consider latest IRA response
According to Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Northern Ireland’s political parties are currently examining new information supplied by the IRA in an attempt to clarify the organisation’s stance on the peace process.
Attending an engagement in Dublin this morning Mr Ahern said that he was awaiting responses from the main pro-agreement parties in Northern Ireland.
The Taoiseach and British prime minister Tony Blair have been assessing new information provided by the IRA last night. He confirmed to reporters this morning that it was now all down to a few but “very important” issues.
Although details have not been forthcoming the main issues are believed to centre on the prospects for decommissioning on the republican paramilitary organisation’s future status.
The Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble said yesterday that there was a “limited window” and that time for clarity was running out.
The postponed meeting between the Irish and British premiers is unlikely to take place on Tuesday as Mr Blair has an engagement aimed at patching up relations with German Chancellor Schroeder later today.

Mr Adams attending a meeting held in a Newry hotel maintained that the IRA statement was both “clear and unambiguous”.

Further Arrest Under Terrorism Act Linked To New IRA Weapons Find
A man has been arrested under the Terrorism Act by police following the discovery of suspected New IRA weapons earlier this month. During a fire in a boiler house in west Belfast on 14 November, police found a significant haul of rifles and ammunition. The weaponry is believed to have been used by the New IRA in previous crimes.
