Eirigi Member Charged With Terrorism Offences

An Eirigi activist has appeared in court in Newry, Country Down, charged with terrorism offences.

Stephen Martin Murney, from Derrybeg Terrace in Newry, is a member of the republican party.

He was charged with collecting and distributing information likely to be of use to terrorists and with having articles likely to be of use to terrorists.

29-year-old Mr Murney is a public relations officer for Eirigi in Newry.

He has been remanded in custody until 12 December.

The court was told by a PSNI detective that Mr Murney was seen at a protest supporting dissident republican prisoners during an Olympic torch parade in June.

It is thought he took photographs of police officers on his mobile phone, which were then published on his Facebook page.

A search of his home on Thursday led to the discovery of two BB guns, two black berets, three military-style jumpers and three pairs of combat trousers.

The court was told police seized a laptop computer containing hundreds of photos of police officers.

But a defence lawyer has claimed the photos were old and his client possessed no photos of serving PSNI officers. He also said the photos were taken for the purposes of claiming harassment.

The district judge remanded Mr Murney on the grounds he might interfere with the investigation.

Around 30 Eirigi supporters were present for the hearing, including the party's general secretary Breandan Mac Cionnaith. They clapped and cheered as Mr Murney was led away.
