Ronan Kerr Murder: Man Released

A 39-year-old man who was arrested in County Tyrone over the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr has been released.

The man, from the Omagh area, was arrested under the Terrorism Act. He was released unconditionally on Tuesday evening.

The arrest followed searches in County Tyrone and Cumbria in England.

The man was taken to Antrim police station. He was not arrested on suspicion of murder, but was questioned by police over incidents relating to the attack.

On Monday a 22-year-old man from Omagh was detained by police in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Constable Ronan Kerr was 25 years old when he was killed in a booby-trap car bomb in Omagh on 2 April 2011.

Dissident republican paramilitaries have been blamed for the murder.

Constable Kerr was a Catholic who had recently joined the PSNI.

The policeman’s death was particularly devastating as the young Catholic and GAA fan was seen as a symbol of a post-Troubles Northern Ireland and of the new police force.

He joined the PSNI in May 2010.

A group claiming to consist of former members of the Provisional IRA later admitted responsibility for his murder.

Mr Kerr was the second police officer to be murdered since the formation of the PSNI in 2001.
