NIRC Shop Vacancy Survey Results Described As 'Shocking'
The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) has described the NIRC Shop Vacancy survey findings as "shocking".
The surbey shows that 1 in 5 local shops are now vacant and that Northern Ireland has not just the highest shop vacancy rate in the UK, but nearly twice the national average.
NIIRTA Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said: "Like the recent Lisney report, this survey paints a very grim picture of 1 in 5 shops vacant. Belfast already has 1 in 4 shops vacant and the overall trend is moving toward a quarter of all shops being vacant by the middle of 2013.
"It is good to see increased footfall in our town centres but it is very clear that this is not translating into increased sales for many retailers.
"While these figures are alarming, our focus has to be on solutions to this growing problem. The Executive is making good progress on Rates and Car Parking but has still not produced a strong planning policy to support town centre retailing.
"The Executive needs a new joined up strategy to tackle this problem, alongside comprehensive retail development plans for each town and city to reverse this decline. NIIRTA has already published a 50 point plan, Town Centre First, setting out our ideas and we will continue to bring solutions to Ministers on this issue."

NI Has Highest Shop Vacancy Rates In UK
Northern Ireland has the highest shop vacancy rates in the UK according to recent figures. Research carried out by the British Retail Consortium has revealed that 14% of shops across the country are lying empty and this is compared to a national rate of 11%.

Businesses Damaged By Blaze In Portstewart
An investigation has launched after a number of businesses were damaged by a blaze in The Diamond in Portstewart. The alarm was raised at 5am on Monday, however fire crews were called back at around 9.30am. A chip shop, coffee shop and hairdressers were damaged as a result. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Empty Shop Fronts To Get Art Project Make-Overs
Plans to give empty shops in town centres a new lease of life have been announced. Finance Minister Sammy Wilson plans to change the law to allow community groups to use empty shop fronts for non-commercial purposes without paying full rates. Under current laws businesses are penalised for making alternative use of empty premises.

NI Shopping Numbers Fall
January saw footfall on Northern Ireland's high streets drop, as shopper numbers fell 2.4% on a year ago and were down on the 1.2% rise in December 2014. The vacancy rate in Northern Ireland was 16.3%, which showed a marginal improvement on the previous quarter. The figures were released by the Northern Ireland Retail Consortium (NIRC).

The Health Minister has confirmed that he has requested an early meeting with health service trade unions to discuss next steps on pay offers for 2024/25. Due to Northern Ireland's budgetary constraints, the Minister is unable to deliver the desired pay settlements for this year.
