Man Admits Attack On Loyalist

A man has admitted to trying to murder a top Shankhill loyalist after stabbing him in public at a supermarket.

42-year-old David Madine admitted in a Belfast court on Friday that he attempted to kill Harry Stockman on 20 April 2011.

Mr Madine, of Innishargie Gardens in Bangor, carried out the attempted killing in full view of shoppers last year.

Harry Stockman, 51, was attacked and stabbed over ten times in a supermarket in Ballygomartin, Belfast.

Following the attack, Mr Stockman required emergency surgery to repair damage to his kidney, colon and bowel.

At a previous hearing, a court was told how Mr Madine had been arrested on Twadell Avenue in the city, bare-cheasted and carrying his t-shirt and blood-stained knife.

The accused told police his friend Bobby Moffettt had been shot on the Shankill Road. The UVF was blamed for carrying out the shooting in May 2010.

Mr Madine said in a statement he had known the victim for over 20 years and that "something cracked in his head" when he saw him.

Madine will be sentenced by Belfast Crown Court shortly before Christmas.
