Kenneth Branagh Knighted

Kenneth Branagh is to be knighted later at Buckingham Palace.

The Northern Irish actor will be given the honour by the Queen in a ceremony today.

News of Brannagh’s knighthood was made public in June of this year.

The actor has played a wide range of characters in a variety of styles throughout his career, from classical roles like Hamlet to Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter films.

One of his early roles was as the title character in Graham Reed’s Billy Plays, set in Belfast during the Troubles.

The actor and director was born in Belfast and lived there until he was nine, when his family relocated to Reading due to escalating violence.

He discovered his love for acting in England, but remains involved in the Northern Ireland arts scene.

Branagh was given an honorary Doctorate in Literature from Queen’s University in Belfast and was a vocal supporter of the city’s revamped Lyric Theatre during its funding campaign.

He told the BBC: "When I was a kid I dreamed of pulling on a shirt for the Northern Ireland football team.

"I could only imagine how proud you might feel. Today it feels like they just gave me the shirt and my heart's fit to burst."
