Sinn Féin Call For Padraic Wilson Release
Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly has called for the immediate release of Padraic Wilson, who was arrested last week in connection with the murder of Robert McCartney in 2005.
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on policing was speaking at a press conference in Stormont. "I want to begin by reiterating our call for the immediate release of our party colleague Padraic Wilson who was remanded in custody last Friday," he said.
"We are also calling for the withdrawal of the bogus and politically motivated charges against him. This protest today marks the beginning of a campaign to bring this about.
"We want also to signal up again our determination to have removed from policing structures the small number of political detectives who are continuing to challenge the change agenda within policing.
"The arrest and charging of Padraic Wilson is but the latest manifestation of lingering negative elements within the PSNI which must be removed."
Gerry Kelly praised Padraic Wilson for "a pivotal role in building support among prisoners for the peace process" when he was the leader of republicans in the Maze in the early nineties.
The Sinn Féin announcement has received cross-party condemnation. SDLP Minister Alex Attwood said "to portray the arrest as an old police agenda, as Gerry Kelly claimed, is a clear attempt to mislead.
"In previous years, Sinn Féin complained of 'political influence' over the courts and of 'political policing'. Today, in a brazen public way, Sinn Féin are at the same."
TUV’s Jim Allister said: "It is hard to imagine a situation anywhere else in the western world where a party of government would take to the streets to demand the release of someone accused of serious terrorist offences."
