L'Derry City Of Culture Events Confirmed
The programme of events for L’Derry’s year as UK City of Culture in 2013 has been announced and will include the Turner Prize, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Ballet.
The new programmes arrived in the city by speedboat along the river Foyle.
The year is due to begin with a Sons and Daughters of Derry concert, while writer Frank Cotrell Boyce has been commissioned to create a performance piece on the River Foyle.
2013 will see the Turner Prize held outside England for the first time, staged in the former military barracks on Ebrington Square.
Playwright Brian Friel and actor Stephen Rea will be returning to the city with the Field Day theatre company, which was founded in L’Derry in 1980.
Musical events staged throughout the year will include a punk musical set in Derry during the 1970s based on music from The Undertones. It has been written by local playwright Colin Bateman.
One of L’Derry’s most famous sons, Phil Coulter, will be returning to his home town to perform.
The London Symphony Orchestra will be presenting the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's At Sixes and Sevens as well as performing music written by film composer John Williams.
The Royal Ballet will be returning to Northern Ireland for the first time in over 20 years and will be performing with the Ulster Orchestra.
The city itself will also be on show, with the famous walls being used by art group Lumiere, who will transform the city with special light show.
Comedians Jimmy Carr and Tommy Tiernan are also due to perform as part of the celebrations, while BBC Radio 1 have confirmed they will be broadcasting from the city.
Other acts organised for the year include Daniel O'Donnell, Primal Scream and Loudon Wainwright III.
