NI Terrorist Threat To GB Downgraded To 'Moderate'

A Northern Ireland related terrorist attack to Great Britain has been downgraded from substantial to moderate, the Home Secretary has said.

Teresa May said while an attack was possible it is unlikely.

In a statement to MPs today, May said: "Today the Security Service reduced the threat level to Great Britain from Northern Ireland-related terrorism from substantial to moderate.

"This means that a terrorist attack is possible, but not likely."

"Despite the change which has been made today, there remains a real and serious threat against the United Kingdom from terrorism and I would ask the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

"The decision to change this threat level is taken by the Security Service independently of ministers and is based on the very latest intelligence, considering factors such as capability, intent and timescale. Threat levels are kept under constant review."

MI5 published a statement on its website: The threat level for international terrorism remains at SUBSTANTIAL across the whole of the United Kingdom. This reflects the continuing threats from dissident republican groups in Northern Ireland and from international terrorists throughout the country. The public should remain alert to the danger of terrorism and for suspicious activities and any other potential signs of terrorist activity that may be encountered."
