NI TVs Mark Final Digital Switchover

Northern Irish televisions will be part of the final stage of the UK digital TV switchover tonight, as all analogue channels will be turned off.

Anyone still watching analogue TV will lose access to all of their channels at 23:30, while viewers who are using digital TVs or set-top boxes will simply have to re-tune.

The analogue signal has been in use for more than 70 years and Ceefax, which has been in use for three decades, will also be switched off.

Analogue BBC Two was switched off on Wednesday 10 October.

Digital TV has a wide range of channels and, often, an improved picture quality.

Most analogue TVs can be converted simply by plugging in a digital set-top box.

Viewers using Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV will have retune on tonight, but those who use Sky TV, Virgin Media or freesat will not be affected by the change.

Tonight BBC One Northern Ireland and UTV are jointly broadcasting a programme to mark the occasion. It will be hosted by Eamonn Holmes and begins at 22:35.

Dame Mary Peters will be turning off the analogue switch at the Divis transmitter in Belfast.
