19% Rise In L'Derry Burglaries
Police in L’Derry have reported a 19% rise in burglaries in the area.
The increase of nearly a fifth has occurred since April 2012.
In more than 50% of domestic burglaries, police say the criminal gained entry to the property via an unlocked door or window.
Householders are being urged to take sensible steps to protect their homes and to follow basic crime prevention advice.
The news has come as police in the Foyle area begin their Operation Safer Homes campaign.
Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: "As part of Operation Safer Homes, there will be increased police patrols, leaflet drops and an advertising campaign to remind local residents to ensure their homes are secure at all times.
"We have seen an increase in walk-in burglaries rather than break-ins and this is down to people not locking their doors or windows. We are continually working to raise awareness of burglaries and while we conduct patrols, respond to reports of suspicious activity and deliver crime prevention, everyone can play their part in taking proper precautions to protect their home and property.
"We would advise all householders to review their security. If your doors aren’t secure, neither is your home."
He added: "Prevent crime from happening by taking simple steps to make your homes secure. Always lock windows and doors to your home and vehicles. Lock garages and sheds and do not leave garden or sports equipment lying around.
"Do not make your home an easy target for criminals. I would also ask anyone who notices suspicious activity in their neighbourhood to call us immediately. This could prevent someone from becoming a victim of crime. Please Protect your homes."
