Part-time RIR soldier remanded in custody

A part-time Royal Irish Regiment soldier has been remanded in custody after he admitted shooting a man dead more than two years ago.

Glen Graham Stronge (28) was originally charged with murder following the death of Colin Foy (27) who was shot twice in the head at a Co Tyrone hotel in October 2001.

However, Mr Stronge, who gave his address as care of his barracks at the Deanery, Clogher, later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

Mr Stronge had given himself up voluntarily police at Clogher RUC station shortly after the incident.

A solicitor for the prosecution said that given the medical evidence, the Crown were prepared to accept his plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Stronge was remanded in custody at Belfast Crown Court to await sentencing.
