Man Faces Jail For Animal Cruelty

A man has been told by a District Judge he faces jail for causing cruelty to an animal.

Defendant Gregory Boyd, 44 from Rasharkin, pleaded guilty to the charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a bull.

The animal was being transported to an abattoir on 7 July 2011.

A charge was also brought against the defendant’s father, Samuel Boyd, for committing an act of cruelty to the same animal on the same date. He was fined £750.

The bull had to be humanely destroyed, such was the extent and nature of the injuries sustained by the animal.

Gregory Boyd's sentencing had already been adjourned from last month due to his having several relevant previous convictions. The sentencing has now been adjourned once more until 16 November, due to the discovery that he had not contacted the probation service for a pre-sentence report.

The District Judge is considering jailing Boyd. He said the defendant did not seem to care for animals under his control.

The news comes amid calls for tougher sentencing for animal cruelty by a woman whose dog was found hanged in her back garden.

Julie Campbell said an animal abuse register should be implemented following the hanging of her two-year-old Jack Russell Buster from a metal pole on Tuesday morning.

She revealed the family is now seeking alternative accommodation.
