Sligo Workforce Shocked Over Job Losses
According to SIPTU Organiser, Frank Jones the announcement of the 180 job losses at Abbot Plant in Ballytivnan in County Sligo has left many workers speechless.
He said: "There was no expectation among our members that such an announcement was imminent and indeed the sheer number of proposed job losses has shocked the workers who have given loyal and dedicated service to Abbott over many years."
Up to 125 SIPTU members are expected to lose their jobs.

Corus 'To Axe 366 Jobs'
Steelmaker Corus is believed to be axing 366 jobs at its Scunthorpe site in North East England. The company has said that it has "announced proposals to improve the competitiveness of its Scunthorpe site by aligning costs with anticipated steel demand". Consultations with employees and their representatives have begun on the site today.

Bombardier Announces 60 Job Losses
Engineering firm Bombardier has announced it is to cut a further 60 jobs in Northern Ireland. The company said it is cutting up to 60 agency workers from the complementary labour force. Regional Coordinating Officer Davy Thompson said the jobs losses are another blow for the manufacturing sector.

220 Job Losses In Dublin And Kerry
Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Dara Calleary TD, has said the loss of more than 220 jobs in Dublin and Kerry is a major setback. Deputy Calleary made the comments as it emerged that Cadbury owner Mondelez will cut 160 jobs at its chocolate manufacturing plants in Rathmore, Co Kerry and Coolock, Co Dublin.

S&A Foods Announces 300 Job Losses
S&A Foods in Derby has announced 300 job losses and the firm has also gone into administration. Unite the union which represents around 200 hourly paid production staff, said that cash flow problems relating to the firms' contract with supermarket giant, Asda was the root cause for the closure.
