Pin Prick Girl Awarded €18,000

A Belfast couple has been awarded €18,000 compensation after their 12-year-old daughter was pricked by a pin in a Dublin hotel bed.

Robert and Gillian Kane form Dundonald told of the worry and anguish they suffered over not knowing if their daughter had been infected via a hypodermic needle.

The incident occurred at the Travelodge Hotel, Castleknock, in June 2009.

The needle turned out to be a pin from a piece of jewellery.

But the judge ruled that the couple could not have been sure of that at the time, and so their concerns were justifiable. He awarded them each €9,000.

The couple had been attending a function in Dublin connected with their Methodist Church. When they returned to the hotel, a group of young people who had been drinking alcohol at a local festival were in the foyer.

They retired to their rooms, at which point the pin incident occurred.

The compensation was awarded the couple due to the proceeding months of worry over the health of their daughter, Amy. The girl was taken to hospital and a genito-urinary medical clinic for AIDS-associated infections and syphilis tests.

The needle was eventually sent to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, where it was clarified as not being a hollow, hypodermic needle.

The judge said the Kanes had suffered various embarrassments including meeting members of their congregation at the GUM clinic.

The judge said Amy had a phobia of needles and her mother had to hold her down while blood tests were taken and injections were given.

It was three months before the tests returned clear.

Mrs Kane was also concerned for her daughter’s future and the possibility she would have to write in questionnaires that she had been tested for AIDS.
