'Hug A Mug' For NI Cancer Charity
A Northern Ireland cancer charity has announced it will be holding a coffee morning to raise much-needed funds for young cancer-sufferers and their families.
The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) is launching its Hug a Mug campaign on November 2.
According to NICFC, three children a week in Northern Ireland are diagnosed with cancer.
The money raised from the charity’s coffee morning will go towards services such as respite accommodation for families, ward support and youth programmes.
NICFC volunteer Rachel O’Doherty, from Belfast, said the campaign was a "metaphorical hug" to the hundreds of children across Northern Ireland living with cancer.
"By doing something as ordinary as holding a coffee morning and getting everyone to donate as much as they can you are actually doing something amazing; you are helping to raise funds for children with cancer and their families," she said.
Fermanagh woman Geraldine McGovern lost her brother Terry to cancer last May.
"After my brother passed away, NICFC youth programme worker Jacqui Clancy took my little brother and sister on residential breaks and day trips. Jacqui was incredible with them; I owe a lot to her and NICFC. After my brother’s death they were reluctant to go out or play with their friends so this was a great way to get them interacting with other kids again."
To help the public prepare for the campaign, NICFC has just launched a Hug in a Mug recipe book, which can be bought at Spar and Vivoxtra shops across Northern Ireland.
