Junior Ministers "Walk A Mile"
Junior Ministers Jennifer McCann and Jonathon Bell have been participating in the "Walk a Mile in our Shoes" event at Stormont.
The event was organised by Guide Dogs NI and involved the Junior Ministers putting on blindfolds and guided through a short route.
The route saw the Ministers taken across roads and negotiating steps and obstacles.
Pupils from Lagan College, Methodist College and Aquinas Grammar helped guide the Junior Ministers through the course.
Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said: "This event has provided a very practical experience of some the many issues faced on a daily basis by blind and partially sighted people. Tasks that many of us take for granted like crossing the road become a challenge. I would like to thank Guide Dogs NI for organising this event and our young 'sighted guides' who helped us negotiate the course."
The event follows the Junior Ministers’ launch of a consultation on a draft disability strategy on 25 April. The strategy identifies key strands of work which aim to tackle the inequalities experienced by disabled people.
The strategy covers all types of disabilities and all age and OFMDFM officials are currently analysing the consultation responses which will inform the final strategy.
Junior Minister Bell said: "I have enormous respect and admiration for the excellent work carried out by volunteers who willingly give up their time to help others. Without this support invaluable schemes such as the “My Guide” service would not be able to happen. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of volunteering to contact Guide Dogs NI to enquire further about the “My Guide service."
More information on volunteering can be obtained by calling Guide Dogs NI on: 0845 3727 402.
