Health And Care Consultation Launched

Today sees the launch of a public consultation on a new service framework for health and care services for the elderly.

Health Minister Edwin Poots launched the consultation, which sets out standards in a number of areas.

The areas include person-centred care, health and social well-being improvement, safeguarding, those who care for the elderly, the conditions which are more common in older people and medicines management.

The Minister said: "My Department has long recognised the need to improve services for older people and to enhance support for their families and carers who play a vital role in their care.

"Older people are the main users of Health and Social Services and this demand is likely to increase. We have an ageing population, and this brings with it an increased likelihood of disability and dependency. Many medical conditions such as stroke, vascular disease, or dementia are more likely to occur in those over 65.

"It is in this context that it was necessary to review how services are focused, designed and organised within current and future resource limitations."

The framework includes 46 standards and has been created in order to improve service provision with the aim of reducing hospital admissions by treating patients at home.

Minister Poots encouraged people to respond to the consultation, saying: "It is in the interests of everyone to ensure the best possible health and social services for our older people."
