JJB Shopper Cautioned

A disorderly shopper has been cautioned by police in L’Derry following trouble at a branch of the collapsed JJB Sport chain.

Police were called at around 11pm on Monday to the Strand Road, where masses of people had accumulated as shoppers tried to get their hands on discounted sports gear.

Police responded to calls that large numbers of shoppers were attempting to force their way into the shop.

Branches of JJB have been offering closing-down discounts following news that 20 of the company’s 153 UK shops were being sold to rival competitors Sports Direct.

The 20 shops sold off include the Antrim town JJB outlet, the Lisburn store and the Strand Road shop in Derry.

Sports Direct purchased the remaining stock is now shipping it to the 20 shops it has bought off JJB.

It is thought those branches will continue to trade as JJB until the stock has been sold. They will then close and be reopened as Sports Direct stores.

A spokesman for Sports Direct said: "The stock that we bought from the administrators will be sold primarily through these 20 stores with heavy discounts."

All stores that were not included in the sale have been closed, resulting in a loss of about 2,200 jobs.

The stores that shut are Belfast Ann Street, Belfast Royal Avenue, Belfast Drumkeen, Ballymena, Bangor, Coleraine, Craigavon, L’Derry (Richmond Centre), Newry and Newtownards.

Experts are predicting more high street shops may be forced to close in the run up to Christmas, as the retail sector continues to suffer losses.
