Omagh Tesco Bid Withdrawn
Tesco has withdrawn an application to build a new superstore on the edge of Omagh.
The news comes as a result of a letter to the Planning Service from a planning consultant at Tesco, requesting that the processing of the application be "stopped immediately".
The letter refers to the passing of a time limit for a deal between Tesco and developer Opportunity Omagh.
"Due to the legal contract between the applicant and the developer in relation to this site having passed its longstop date, we wish to withdraw this application with immediate effect", it states.
The "longstop date" refers to a legal term which indicates specific conditions must be met by a certain time. Failure to meet the specified conditions means one of the parties to a contract can walk away.
The Tesco application for a food superstore, petrol filling station and associated car parking had originally been submitted to NI Planning Service in September 2011.
Almost a year later, it seems the supermarket giant has pulled the plug on the operation.
It is thought that Tesco might still submit an application in the future.
The potential location for the Tesco store is a 37-acre site with outline planning permission for various business and leisure uses.
Attention has now turned to another 7,000 square metres superstore on the Mountjoy Road, which has received recommendation from planners.
This recommendation will be discussed by Omagh Council's planning committee next month.

Hundreds of construction jobs are expected to be created following full planning approval for a new Tesco superstore. The store will be situated in Newtownards, north Down, on the site of the old Ards Abattoir off the Portaferry Road. The Northern Ireland Assembly has heard of plans to increased planning application fees by 20%. Proposals brought forward to the Environment Committee are believed to be aimed at saving jobs within the Planning Service. Officials told MLAs the move was essential following a substantial drop in planning applications, which fell by £4.

Over 700 Tesco drivers at distribution hubs in Belfast and Doncaster are to ballot for strike action next week over a pay dispute. The firm announced a pay offer of 0 per cent for 2015 and 1.5 per cent for 2016. The strike vote follows a 91 per cent rejection of the pay offer across the three sites.
