Orange Order Must Engage Directly With Residents - Maginness

An SDLP North Belfast MLA has said the Orange Order should engage in direct talks with Carrickhill residents in advance of the Ulster Covenant Parade on September 29th.

Alban Maginness was speaking after he and Cllr Nichola Mallon met with Orange Order officials at their Schomberg House headquarters.

He said: "The Orange Order has been making moves in the right direction when it comes to easing tensions in North Belfast but talking with residents is a critical and essential element if there is to be a genuine, mutually respectful process.

"The only way forward is to engage directly with the residents and have meaningful and mutually respectful dialogue.

"The Carrickhill residents are not averse to parades per se, but they do require respect – and the first step to showing that respect is to engage directly.

"Maybe then we can dare to hope for a future of mutual tolerance and respectful engagement that makes the vicious scenes of past summers truly a thing of the past."
