'Embarrassing' Report Into Housing Executive Contracts

The Housing Executive was complacent about poor and bogus repair work by contractors, an independent report has found.

Staff at the Housing Executive were investigated as a result of problems with former contractor Red Sky.

And the body’s chairman said the Audit Office report out yesterday is "embarrassing".

John McPeake told the BBC: "There are examples in this report which I am embarrassed about because they shouldn't have happened; I believe they are a stain on the record of Housing Executive.

"We are absolutely committed to addressing those issues, so we protect what the organisation has done in the past and can continue to provide a good service to the tenants that we serve."

The report traced problems with now-defunct Red Sky and several predecessor companies, going back at least 12 years.

It found "serious weaknesses" in the management of Housing Executive contracts worth more than £200m.

Eight members of staff have faced disciplinary action while five of the 28 investigated have now retired.

The police confirmed they could not take action due to a lack of evidence of criminal activity.
