Own Goal Leaves NI With Disappointing Draw
A Northern Ireland own goal at Windsor Park last night meant the team had to settle for a draw in the World Cup qualifier.
The hosts dominated the game as their rivals Luxembourg trailed but Northern Ireland squandered numerous chances.
After a goal from Dean Shiels put them ahead, they failed to push the score any higher and a late shot from Luxembourg's Daniel da Mota deflected off Ryan McGivern to fly past keeper Roy Carroll and concede a point to the travelling team.
It is the first time in ten competitive games that Luxembourg have avoided defeat.
Manager Michael O'Neill admitted the team had got frustrated in the second half and had not held on to the ball enough.
He said: "I'm very disappointed. We had enough chances to win more than one game and we didn't capitalise.
"We let our standards drop in the second half, they got a bit of belief and they punished us."
Northern Ireland will next play Portugal (away) and return to Windsor Park on November 14 to face Azerbaijan.
