McKillop Wins Achievement Award At Paralympics Closing Ceremony

Ballymena runner Michael McKillop beat off stiff competition from Oscar Pistorius and Sherif Othman to be named the male athlete who best exemplified the spirit of the Paralympics at London 2012.

Alongside Kenyan discus, javelin and shot put athlete Mary Nakhumicha Zakayo, he picked up the gold medal for the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award at the closing ceremony to the Games last night.

McKillop tweeted that he was "so proud" of the honour.

The middle distance runner won gold medals for Ireland in the 800m and 1,500m T37 events.

A statement from the International Paralympic Committee said that McKillop was selected due to his work with young people.

The statement read: "McKillop consistently dedicates time to helping and encouraging thousands of school children throughout Ireland. He believes all Paralympians should help promote their own sports and serve as role models for the next generation."

The award is named after South Korean Dr Whang Youn Dai, who spent her life working towards the development of Paralympic sport.
