Man Admits Causing Heart Attack Death During Robbery
A 21-year-old has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of the pensioner who tried to stop him escaping from the scene of an attempted armed robbery.
Samuel Crawford, 75, died in hospital two days after he suffered a heart attack while trying to stop Darren Valliday-Smyth escaping from a newsagents on Cavendish Street in November 2010.
Valliday-Smyth, from Clonard Place in Belfast, changed his plea today, a week before he was due to go to trial.
He will be sentenced at a later date.
The young man tried to rob McGovern’s newsagents while brandishing a CS gas canister, but was thwarted.
Mr Crawford tried to use his walking stick to stop Valliday-Smyth leaving the scene, but he collapsed and was taken to hospital.
A vigil was held for him in west Belfast after his death.

QUB Questioned Over Conversion Therapy Practice
An organisation supporting the health and wellbeing of the LGBT community has said Queen's University Belfast's "regret" over the use of gay conversion therapies is "not enough". The university's involvement in the practice came to light in a report by BBC NI, which included revelations of electric shock 'treatments' being used during the 1960s.

Two Men Injured In Separate Shooting Attacks In Belfast
Two men have been seriously injured in separate shooting attacks in Belfast on Sunday, 28 January. A 41-year-old man was shot in both legs and an arm in the Divismore Park area of Ballymurphy in west Belfast. Elsewhere, a 26-year-old man was shot in the legs in the Upper Meadow Street area in north Belfast.

Invest NI Announces Jobs For Derry
Over 40 new jobs will be created by three companies in the North West which are benefiting from Invest Northern Ireland's Jobs Fund. The announcement was made by Invest NI Chief Executive Alastair Hamilton during visits to Axa Insurance, Fresh Food Kitchen and One Stop Data, all based in Londonderry.

Thousands of smokers stubbed-it out yesterday as the Ulster Cancer Foundation's (UCF) annual No Smoking Day helped people across NI to kick the habit. Day two for 'quitters' looms, but one ex-smoker said it is important to persevere.
