Funding to reduce youth crime announced
Criminal Justice Minister Des Browne has announced additional funding of £12.65 million to develop services to turn young people away from crime.
The investment package was unveiled today by the minister as he officially launched the new Youth Justice Agency at the Waterfront Hall.
The Agency, which will replace the Juvenile Justice Board from tomorrow, will introduce a range of community based schemes to divert young people away from crime and deal with those who offend.
It is anticipated that the Youth Justice Agency will introduce a range of community-based measures for dealing with child offenders, to include reparation orders, community responsibility orders and bail support schemes.
Earlier this month, the minister announced a £7.5 million package to support the new community safety strategy.
With effect from 1 April, Martin Mogg, currently Principal Director, will become the Chief Executive of the Agency.

Secretary of State Peter Hain has given an "absolute assurance" that community restorative justice schemes will not become an alternative to policing. Speaking after a meeting with the Policing Board in Belfast on Tuesday Mr Hain said he wanted to "nail the rumour" that community restorative justice was some kind of alternative to policing".

New Youth Justice Agency Headquarters Officially Open
The new Youth Justice Agency (YJA) headquarters was officially opened today. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Justice Minister Naomi Long opened the new facilities, which are based at Charles House, Donegall Street, Belfast.
