Irish Government Alters Employment Legislation
THE Irish Government has published legislation which will allow citizens of 10 new EU member states to live and work in the Republic from May 2004.
The Employment Permits Bill, introduced last week, stated clearly that work permits will not be required in the case of nationals of EU accession states from day one.
However, the Bill will also create specific offences for employers and employees operating without work permits.
At present workers from non-EU countries require work permits or visas, but EU citizens do not.
Tánaiste Mary Harney has warned, however, that her department would continue to monitor closely demand for work permits for non-EU workers, especially those in low skill sectors.
