White Van Man Grabs Eight-Year-Old

A child in Londonderry was approached by three men in a white van, one of whom grabbed her arm.

The eight-year-old girl managed to get away but was left shaken by the attack.

The incident, which happened yesterday at 2.50pm in the Sheelin Park area, was the second time in a week that a suspicious child approach has been reported to police around Ballymagroarty.

Police have appealed for information about this incident and another one in the Ennis Place area last Thursday, when a 10-year-old girl approached by an unknown man broke free and got home.

Man Beat Dog With Baton

A man who beat his dog with a four-foot-long baton after hearing it had mauled his eight-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 240 hours of community service.

John Ireland, 32, from Ferguson Street escaped prison because the judge said he showed full remorse for his actions.

The two-year-old jack russell terrier was so badly injured it had to be put down.

Four-Star Boost For Upgraded Hotel

A County Down hotel has been awarded four-star status after undergoing a £4m refurbishment.

The Burrendale Hotel and Country Club in Newcastle was praised by tourism minister Arlene Foster for enhancing Northern Ireland's "reputation for first-class hospitality".

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

74-Year-Old Shot In Chest
A pensioner has been taken to hospital after being shot in the chest by a masked man in Ballycastle, County Antrim. The 74-year-old man was working in a shed at a property in the Islandboy Road area at about 20:45 on Thursday evening when the attacker approached and shot him.

Man Arrested In Connection With Dromara Assault
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a report of an assault at licenced premises at the Rathfriland Road area of Dromara. Detective Inspector Bell said: "Shortly before 10:10pm on Friday 15th December, it was reported that an altercation occurred at a bar in the area following three men refused entry to the premises.

Man Dies In Portadown Road Crash
An 18-year-old man has died following a collision in Portadown. The crash happened on the Dungannon Road between midnight and 12.30am on Wednesday, 08 November. The road has been re-opened. Elsewhere, a man, aged in his 30's, has died in a road collision in Co Antrim.

Man Released On Bail Over Lurgan Murder
A man arrested in connection with a murder in Lurgan on Sunday, 06 August, has been released on bail pending further enquiries. The body of a man, aged 45, was discovered at a flat on Victoria Street. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
