'Career Criminal' Denied Bail For Daughter's Wedding
A man who is accused of stealing a safe containing a couple's life savings will not be allowed bail to attend his daughter's wedding, the Strabane Weekly News has reported.
Patrick Joseph Ward, 42, of Daisyfield Park, Londonderry, appeared at Strabane Magistrates Court via videolink from Maghaberry pirson to ask for bail to go to his 18-year-old daughter's wedding.
He is charged with stealing £70,000 in cash and £10,000 worth of jewellery from a house in Strabane on March 22.
The court heard that two previous bail applications had been refused, as police feared he might offend again and might not turn up for trial.
But his defence solicitor Michael McGee told the court that an address had been found for his client that would facilitate electronic tagging.
A PSNI detective constable told the court that the theft occurred when the occupants of the house were out for the day.
Thieves took a glass panel out of the back door and smashed a safe open, taking money and gold jewellery but leaving silver jewellery behind.
The policeman said he had DNA evidence linking Ward to the scene.
He said the PSNI believed that Ward was a 'career criminal' whose only means of employment was to "go round burgling people's property", and that he had used 19 alias names over the years.
District judge Liam McNally said he was "not satisfied" that Ward’s daughter was really planning to get married.
Ward was remanded in custody to appear before Strabane Magistrates Court on Thursday, August 30.
