Ballymena Couple's Lottery Win Down To Age Mix-Up
A Ballymena couple have celebrated a £1.9m lottery win which only happened because the husband got his wife's age wrong.
Like many people, Paddy and Gail Millar chose numbers that had some meaning to them when they played the lottery.
But Paddy put Gail's age down as 48 instead of 49 when choosing the numbers and the mistake led to the couple's win in the Euromillions draw of August 10.
Paddy told the Belfast Telegraph: "It's the best mistake I've made in my life. And Gail’s forgiven me - particularly since I made her younger."
The couple are both nurses, Paddy in a district nursing team and Gail in the Antrim Area Hospital.
The say they have no plans yet for spending their winnings, but are going to celebrate with a pre-planned holiday to the Republic of Ireland.
Paddy bought more tickets than usual because of the £148m jackpot.
He said: "I do the same numbers on my usual tickets, but the winning line was a spur of the moment selection - the girls' ages of 11 and 17, 21 for our wedding anniversary, my age of 50 - and, course, Gail's wrong age of 48."
Paddy said he cried when he found out he had won, and waited a day to tell his wife because he wanted to sleep that night.
