Bollywood Film Could Be Shot In Belfast

Talks between Northern Irish film developers and the producers of a Bollywood musical could see Belfast City Hall become the site of an upcoming film shoot.

Northern Ireland Screen is negotiating with Mumbai-based producers of action movie David, after work by Invest NI's Bangalore office.

If successful, the City Hall would be the backdrop to the film, which is partly based in the UK.

It would be in Northern Ireland for nine days of filming and could involve up to 500 extras.

An application to use parts of the striking City Hall building is due to be discussed by the city council.

Indian film producers, who met with City Hall officials earlier this month to discuss logistics, have asked to film in the Great Hall, on the main staircase and rotunda area for at least one full day in September.

Councillor Deirdre Hargey said her party Sinn Fein would support the move.

She said: "We see it as a good initiative and it works well with our investment package for the city, the next phase of which is to attract investment from the international arena. Long term, we could be seen as a city for other Bollywood film productions. It is the biggest film industry in the world and the chance to showcase Belfast to a billion people —well, you can’t buy that sort of publicity."

The Bollywood market is worth about $4bn a year.
