Caerphilly Approves Living Wage For Workers
Over 3,000 workers on low wages will be given a pay rise after Caerphilly County Borough Council approved plans to introduce a Living Wage.
The proposals, which will be implemented from 1 October, will ensure all employees are paid at least £7.20 per hour.
Leader of the council, Harry Andrews, said: "This decision illustrates that we are taking a stand for the 3,000+ employees on low wages, the majority of whom are female, frontline staff, by ensuring that none of our workforce earn below the minimum wage."
Although the pay increase has been introduced to help council workers above the poverty line, previous research from the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion found that it can also help combat the negative effects of welfare reform.
