Strategy for economic research unveiled

A document outlining the future strategy of economic research in Northern Ireland has been published today.

Today's publication – ‘Economic Research for Northern Ireland – An Agenda' – highlights the challenges facing the economy, which it is hoped the research agenda will address. Particular stress has been placed upon the need to increase business R&D and innovation, to raise the business birth rate, to improve human capital and raise workplace skills.

The NIO anticipate that a successful agenda will attract knowledge-based investment, and promote competition and integrate disadvantaged individuals and groups into mainstream economic activity.

Speaking at a lunch to thank the independent economists who provided advice to the department in preparing ‘Economic Research for Northern Ireland – An Agenda', the Minister said: “Last June, when my department set out its plans for the next three years 2002 -2005, it made a firm commitment to adopt a stronger and more influential role in relation to the formulation of economic development policy, based on solid research and analysis.

“The publication of the report marks a key stage in the process of further enhancing evidence based policy development. To support this new approach, the department undertook a comprehensive economic research assessment.

"It is essential that we get this process right and that is why we wished to take account of the views of independent economists as well as those within government."

To take forward the research agenda the trade department will work with Northern Ireland’s research bodies, the universities and other research organisations and will also consult with the Economic Development Forum.
