'Disheartening' Vandalism At Belfast Therapy Garden

A therapy garden which is used by disabled groups has been vandalised, the BBC reports.

A local councillor described the arson and vandalism as "disheartening".

On Wednesday evening a poly tunnel worth about £3,000 was set alight and destroyed at Musgrave Park gardens in south Belfast.

The therapy garden contains a story circle, meeting area, a willow tunnel and a specialist planting area for people with disabilities.

Councillor Claire Hanna, SDLP, said: "On Tuesday the park was awarded a green flag award and there was a celebration in the park for staff and users, so it's particularly depressing that after all the work that has gone into developing the park that this has happened.

"It's so disheartening that the people who need this service won't be able to use it to the full benefit.

"Lots of young people are really embracing projects like this and we need to discover why other people are reacting so negatively to it."

Belfast City Council have vowed to repair the garden, where a 'whispering wall' is fitted with acoustic equipment and a mosaic finish for sensory interaction.

It is not clear whether any criminal investigation is under way.
